TWENTY-FIVE

“This was a terrible time of day to go fishing,” Walt’s friend Karl said after they’d put down anchor. He grabbed a couple of cola cans from the cooler and passed one to Walt.

Walt laughed as the boat bobbed on the gentle waves. “Fine. I’ll admit it. I wasn’t really fishing for fish.”

Karl popped the tab of the can and took a long swig. “If you’re a fisher of men, you ought to know this soul has already been caught and is safe and secure with Jesus.”

“Good to know, but I wasn’t fishing for souls either. I needed an excuse to leave so that my grandson and Joey could get a little time to themselves without me underfoot.”

Karl placed his cola in a cupholder and kicked back in his seat, cradling the back of his head in his clasped hands as he stretched out his legs. “Ah. Now I see. You’ve used me as an excuse so you can play Cupid.” He raised his eyebrows. “Matchmaking is a dangerous game, my friend.”

Walt grinned. “I’m not matchmaking exactly. Just providing them a little time to get to know each other one-on-one. What will be will be.”

“Sure,” Karl said.

“Tell me you didn’t catch the way they kept sneaking glances at each other when they thought the other wasn’t paying attention.”

Karl sat up and grabbed his drink. “I don’t know anything about that. Didn’t you say the other day that things had been a little rocky between you and your grandson? I’m not sure meddling is going to do you any favors. He can likely manage his love life without assistance.”

Walt scoffed. “Don’t be so sure. Nearly a decade later, he’s still hung up on that ex-wife of his. They got married for all the wrong reasons, so that wasn’t a great start. Add to that that they were too young and immature to deal with what life dealt them.” An ache throbbed in his heart. “Not that any marriage knows how to handle losing a child. But they were just eighteen.”

Karl’s eyes widened. “Eighteen? That’s a tough hand to be dealt.”

Walt stood and stretched, looking to the lighthouse. “He and Joey might not be ‘meant to be,’ but she’s good for him. I’m getting glimpses of the old Finn. And if a little time together on that old island reminds him that there is still life to live, then my foolhardy plan to rehab the place will be worth something. I can’t go back and take the chances I missed. But if I can encourage Finn to start taking chances again . . .” He shrugged.

“What about you?” Karl asked. “You’ve still got to live life too. To take chances.”

Walt bristled. “I sold everything I own, bought a fixer-upper boat and an entire island. Sounds chancy to me.”

Karl waggled a work-roughened finger at him. “Yeah, but was that ’cause you were living in the present or chasing the past? There’s a big difference.”

“You don’t know a lick.” Walt growled good-naturedly, side-stepping the ring of truth in Karl’s words.
